The Learning Hub: Talking about plant-based meat with Questlove

GatesNotes

Bill Gates and Questlove standing together.

By Bill Gates | August 28, 2023

Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson is the ultimate multi-hyphenate. He’s a Grammy-winning musician—the drummer and joint frontman of the Roots, who entertained people for decades before becoming the in-house band for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. He’s an Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker. He’s the author (or co-author) of seven books, with another one on the way next year. He’s a publisher, too, with a new imprint that is set to release Sly Stone’s memoir. He’s a serial (and cereal) entrepreneur. He’s even a professor at New York University.
And today, Questlove is also a guest on my new podcast, Unconfuse Me with Bill Gates. You can check the episode out here.

I wanted to talk with Questlove for a few reasons. The first is obvious: Who wouldn’t? The second is more personal: Questlove is an investor in and champion of some revolutionary plant-based foods, including a vegetarian Philly cheesesteak I was really curious about. As someone who loves hamburgers—but worries about the environmental impact of beef production—I was interested in Questlove’s journey from a Philadelphia native who breathed “real” cheesesteaks to an evangelist for plant-based proteins.

Because Questlove’s interests and areas of expertise are so vast and varied, our conversation was too. In addition to all things food (including our favorite guilty pleasure snacks), we discussed our childhood nicknames, his massive record collection, how the pandemic forced both of us to slow down, our Wordle strategies, and more. He—and that meatless Philly cheesesteak—blew me away, and I’m sure he’ll blow you away too.

THE LEARNING HUB: How Can I change my life completely and make it interesting

1 Talk to people not to improve but to observe and understand. 2 Dedicate at least half an hour to exercise, half an hour to hobby, half an hour for self-improvement each day. 3 Spend at least one hour of early morning time in acquiring knowledge or walking and enjoying the smooth winds outside. 4 Write a schedule for each day, make a checklist of all important activities, make sure you check most of them before falling asleep. 15 minutes: Introspect your day and identify scope of improvement. Next 15 minutes: Be thankful for whatever went right in the day and express gratitude for whatever you have till date. (Schedule for last half an hour before sleeping.) 5 Be joyful about challenges and issues in life, feel excited to test your strengths and to come out of them like a warrior. Be happy and fearless. Commit to face and fight. 6 Seek inspiration from every person you see, every person does some inspiring things in their life, however, all we do is to feel envious of them, instead ap...

THE LEARNING HUB: Some Tips To Have A Healthy Relationship

Never underestimate the value of asking your partner how his day went. Some fights are just fights. They don't have to be deal brakers. Not all disagreements means that things are all over. All cuples fight but it's how you resolve it that counts Schedule time for yourselves. There is no need to fill your social calendar up every weekend with group events or trips. Take things easy and pencil in a visit to the cinema or a picnic in the park just for the two of you. More “ I love you “ are better than fewer. Nobody gets tired of hearing that they are loved. You really can't say it too often. Kiss hello before doing anything else when you get home. Kiss good bye when you leave Respond to each other's texts, calls… no screening when it comes to your significant other. If he needs to get in touch for whatever reason that should be priority.
